Write Your Story: Jason De Leon

Presented by the Leopold Writing Program in partnership with the Santa Fe International Literary Festival.
Picture
“Human smuggling is exploitative and violent. It also cannot be stopped. But it is not the problem. The monstrous injustices created by capitalism that drive migration are the problem."
― Jason De Leon, Soldiers and Kings

What would a world system free from the destructive forces of capitalism look like? How do you imagine migration would exist in that world?

You made me cry. I have only cried a few times in adult life when I put my dogs down. I’m still crying under my sunglasses on the patio here outside. I own a restaurant that employees mostly people you described but many years before. They have become my friends in the last 20 years. I realize now they have been the lucky ones to have escaped and landed in a safe place. I cry because of what can happen to them and even though I need to retire at 75, I fear for them. Later, when I go out for some ridiculously expensive birthday dinner, I will drink a toast to you. What you do totally matters.

- Nancy P.

People would invest in each other. Humans would move mostly just to care for each other. Opportunity would not be the driver as opportunity would exist in one's homeland.
