Write Your Story: Ramona Emerson
Presented by the Leopold Writing Program in partnership with the Santa Fe International Literary Festival.
“Grandma always said to me that you never do things for people to get something in return. That is the white man’s way of living. You do it because they need you. You do it because if you don’t, no one else will.”
― Ramona Emerson, Shutter What is it you do because no one else will?

The dishes!

The dishes! Pick up the dog’s poop! I’m not a mom, but I can relate to the quiet strength of just getting on with it and doing gross stuff. I remember that when I was a kid, I started crying when my mom told me I’d have to pick up my new dogs poop. It just seemed impossibly gross. But as an adult, having cleaned up many dogs, babies, and older adults, I thought one day that what it means to be a grown person is to clean up liquidy poop and vomit. In fact, I will go so far as to say, that if you haven’t done that dirty work, you have skirted one of the things it means to be grown. (She says with just a dash of bitterness.)
