Summer Programs
At the Historic Aldo Leopold House

The Leopold Writing Program began leasing the Historic Aldo Leopold House in May, 2025. Since then, we have invited partners, writers, scientists, and community members into the house to help us realize our vision: To give new life to the house by transforming it into a Library for Environmental Writing.

We are thrilled to share two programs we will be running this summer to realize this vision:

The Environmental Writing Workshop Series
Featuring two of Albuquerque's renowned literary figures, writer and journalist Laura Paskus and poet and former Albuquerque Poet L
aureate Jessica Helen Lopez, these workshops offer writers of every level a chance to engage with their literary practice and explore themes of connection to land, self, and community.

The Backyard Story Series
An opportunity for community members to mingle with their neighbors and peers and share stories on a stage.

About the Environmental Writing Workshop Series

The Leopold House Environmental Writing Workshop Series is designed to support writers in exploring the relationship between storytelling, place, and environmental consciousness. Hosted at the historic Leopold House and surrounding bosque landscape, the series combines generative writing, land-based learning, peer feedback, and public sharing. Where better to write about nature than in Aldo Leopold's home?

Through generative writing, land-based learning, reflection, and guided peer exchange, writers cultivate work that is attentive to both inner and outer landscapes. Alongside local writers (new and established are welcome) participants become part of a creative community shaped by curiosity, care, and environmental awareness.

The series culminates in a public reading and community gathering, offering participants the opportunity to share their work and step into Albuquerque’s wider literary and cultural conversation.

About the Backyard Story Series

Backyard Story Series is a night to share and listen to true stories from your neighbors, friends, strangers, professional writers, nonprofessional writers, and people like you.

Picking up from a Nob Hill-based Backyard Story Night that took place from 2015 - 2019, the Leopold House Story Series invites anyone interested in a connection between humans and nature (everyone) to share their stories. Stories can be inspiring, educational, sad, funny, moving, poetic, eerie, or all of the above.

Stories are five minutes long and read back to back for an hour in the large, shady backyard of the Historic Leopold House. Bring a blanket or chair and come listen or share on a shady lawn in downtown Albuquerque.

Are you interested in sharing a story? Click here to sign up for our first Backyard Story Night! The theme is: The Life of Water.
