“In a country where possessions counted for everything, we had no belongings except our stories. Isn't that what education is all about? Getting the student to sincerely say what the teacher wants to hear?”
― Viet Thanh Nguyen, The Refugees If you could hold onto one story from your life as your only possession, what would it be?

As I move though the next decade
Anonymous May 17, 2025 As I move though the next decade, I no longer have the aching desire to create a story but to hold on to the stories from my mother. Her story of defiance and betrayal, and what brought me and my siblings into existence. Fleeing her mother’s good intentions to marry her off to an old military man for a safe life with a home, food and status. Choosing a young foreigner, a military man, no money and no status, but holding countless dreams. Dreams that she spilled into me and my siblings, tinged with the flavor of longing for island breezes, roadside noodles and mahjong rooms. |
